Report on 2009 San Felipe 250
The 23rd Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 desert race was held in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico, on March 14, 2009.
Setting a blistering pace right from the start on Johnny Campbell CRF450X Racing Hondas were Kendall Norman and Tim Weigand on bike 3X and Jeff “OX” Kargola, filling in for injured Colton Udall, and Quinn Cody on bike 4X.
“I took over the bike from OX at mile 35—about 1 minute, 30 seconds behind Timmy Weigand.” said Quinn Cody riding on the 4x team, finishing second with a time of 4:17:19. ”I reeled him in during the first 10 minutes and by mile 50 I had passed him and pulled a small gap. Then I just rode smooth until I blew a corner about mile 140. I didn’t know it at the time but a stick from a bush had punctured the radiator. I continued to ride hard clear to the rider change, at mile 165, and I had built a 3 1/2 minute lead. At the pit we noticed the leak in the radiator and had to change it—that took about 10 minutes.”
“In a short race like San Felipe you have no time to recover from problems like that.” said Cody. “We lost by 8 minutes or so, but we were happy to get the 1-2 finish for JCR Honda.”
“We just had a solid ride,” said Kendall Norman who finished first on the 232.4-mile course with a time of 4:09:27. “We were behind our JCR teammate and his riders on 4X, but when they came into the pit where I got on, they had radiator problems and we took the lead again.”
